– The Islamic definition of witchcraft
– What the Quran and Hadith say about it
– The punishment for practicing magic
– How to recognize and protect yourself from witchcraft
– Islamic remedies for those affected
Let’s dive in!
1. What Is Witchcraft (Sihr) in Islam?
Witchcraft, or Sihr, refers to supernatural acts performed through evil means often involving jinn (invisible beings made of smokeless fire) and harmful spells.
Unlike miracles from Allah, witchcraft relies on Shaytan (Satan) and his allies to deceive and harm people.
The Quran mentions witchcraft in several verses, confirming its existence but strictly forbidding it.

Quranic References to Witchcraft
Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:102):
“And they followed instead what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon… But Solomon did not disbelieve; rather, the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, ‘We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].’ And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah.”
This verse highlights:
- – Magic is real but forbidden.
- – It was taught by devils, not by the righteous.
- – Its power is limited only by Allah’s permission can it affect someone.
2. Is Witchcraft Real? Islamic Perspective
Some people doubt whether witchcraft is real, but Islam confirms its existence while warning against it.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself was a victim of witchcraft, proving that it can harm even the most pious individuals.
The goal of Islam is to completely shut this door and prevent the pathways that typically result in the dissemination of evil among individuals and create discord among them.
This is due to the fact that the actions taken by those who practice magic typically lead to producing evil and harm to others.
Therefore, it is logical and justifiable to assert that a total ban is the sole method to prevent this wrongdoing and to cleanse the land and community of such malevolent actions and the falsehoods and myths associated with them, by eliminating witchcraft and its followers from societies.
This clearly fulfills an important function.
Hadith About the Prophet (ﷺ) Being Affected by Magic
In Sahih al-Bukhari (5765), Aisha (RA) reported:
“The Prophet (ﷺ) was bewitched so that he began to imagine that he had done something although he had not.”
This shows that witchcraft can cause illusions, confusion, and even physical harm.
Although some individuals who practice witchcraft may perform positive actions through their magic, this does not excuse their engagement in sin and disobedience to Allah, for several reasons, including the following:
1. The path taken to study witchcraft often results in giving way to disbelief and sin.
2. The ruling pertains to the typical circumstances concerning the actions of the witchcraft practitioner and disregards any exceptions.
3. The Punishment for Practicing Witchcraft in Islam
Islam takes witchcraft very seriously so much so that it is considered a major sin, sometimes even leading to apostasy.
Hadith on the Punishment for Sorcery
The Prophet (ﷺ) said in Sunan Abu Dawood (3867):
“The prescribed punishment for the sorcerer is a strike with the sword (i.e., execution).”
This severe punishment indicates how dangerous witchcraft is not just to individuals but to society as a whole.
4. Signs of Witchcraft: How to Recognize It
Witchcraft can manifest in different ways. Some common signs include:
– Unexplained illnesses (chronic pain, sudden fatigue)
– Strange dreams or nightmares (seeing snakes, being chased)
– Marital problems (sudden hatred between spouses)
– Financial ruin without reason
– Extreme mood swings or depression
However, not every problem is due to witchcraft sometimes, it’s just life’s tests.
Consulting a knowledgeable scholar is essential before jumping to conclusions.
5. Islamic Protection Against Witchcraft
Allah has given us powerful tools to protect ourselves from evil, including witchcraft.
A. Reciting Quranic Verses for Protection
– Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) – Protects against evil.
– Surah Al-Falaq (113) & Surah An-Nas (114) – Shield against black magic and envy.
B. Daily Adhkar (Remembrances)
– Morning and evening supplications (from Hisnul Muslim).
– “Bismillah” before doing anything.
C. Ruqyah (Islamic Healing)
Ruqyah involves reciting Quran over water or oil and using it for healing.
The Prophet (ﷺ) approved of it as long as it doesn’t involve shirk (associating partners with Allah).

6. How to Remove Witchcraft: Islamic Remedies
If someone is affected by witchcraft, Islam provides solutions:
A. Seeking Help from Righteous Scholars
Only those with proper Islamic knowledge should perform Ruqyah ‘avoid fake healers who use talismans or shirk.
B. Hijama (Cupping Therapy)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Indeed, the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama).” (Sahih Bukhari 5696)
C. Repentance and Strengthening Faith
Since witchcraft thrives on weak faith, increasing worship (prayer, Quran, dhikr) weakens its effects.
7. Common Misconceptions About Witchcraft
Myth 1: “Magic is Just Superstition”
– The Quran and Hadith confirm its reality.
Myth 2: “All Healers Can Remove Witchcraft”
