The Signs of the Hour

The Signs of the Hour

Understanding the Signs of the Hour

The concept of the “Hour” (الساعة) in Islam refers to the Day of Judgment the moment when this world will come to an end, and all beings will be resurrected for divine reckoning.

Both the Quran and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) provide detailed descriptions of the events leading up to this monumental day.

But why should we learn about these signs? Knowing them strengthens our faith, reminds us of life’s temporary nature, and motivates us to prepare for the Hereafter.

ALLAAH has hidden the knowledge of the Hour because Islamic wisdom and logic indicate that this is necessary, as it is more impactful in motivating people to follow Him and discouraging them from disobedience.

Likewise, he has hidden the lifespan of every individual.

The verses show that the Prophet (peace and blessings of ALLAAH be upon him) was unaware of when the Hour would commence.

Indeed, he was aware that it was near in broad terms, and he (peace and blessings of ALLAAH be upon him) informed us of this.

In this article, we’ll explore the Major and Minor Signs of the Hour, supported by Quranic verses and authentic Hadith, in an engaging and easy-to-understand way.

 1. The Minor Signs of the Hour (Alamat Sughra)

The Minor Signs are events that occur gradually over time, many of which we may already be witnessing today.

Let’s break them down:

1.1. The Prophethood of Muhammad (ﷺ) and His Passing

The first sign was the coming of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself. He said:

"I have been sent and the Hour (is near) like these two," and he joined his index and middle fingers. (Sahih Bukhari 6504)

His death marked the beginning of the countdown to the Last Day.

1.2. The Spread of Knowledge and Ignorance

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Among the signs of the Hour is that knowledge will be taken away and ignorance will prevail.” (Sahih Bukhari 80)

Today, we see both an abundance of information and a rise in misinformation a clear fulfillment of this prophecy.

1.3. Increase in Wealth and Materialism

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) warned:

“The Hour will not come until money becomes so abundant that a man will be given a hundred dinars and still be dissatisfied.” (Sahih Muslim 157)

In an age of billionaires and extreme wealth disparity, this Hadith feels incredibly relevant.

1.4. Moral Decay and Normalization of Sin

The Prophet (ﷺ) described:

"There will come a time when the murderer will not know why he killed, and the killed will not know why he was killed." (Sahih Muslim 157)

We see random violence, corruption, and shameless promotion of sin clear indicators of this prophecy.

1.5. Time Passing Quickly

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“The Hour will not come until time passes rapidly, so a year will be like a month, a month like a week, a week like a day, a day like an hour, and an hour like the flicker of a flame.” (Ahmad, Tirmidhi)

With our fast-paced lives, this Hadith resonates deeply.

2. The Major Signs of the Hour (Alamat Kubra)

The Major Signs are dramatic, world-changing events that will occur shortly before the Day of Judgment.

Let’s explore them in order:

2.1. The Appearance of the False Messiah (Dajjal)

The Dajjal (Anti-Christ) will be one of the greatest trials for humanity. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“There is no creation since Adam more evil than the Dajjal.” (Sahih Muslim 2946)

He will claim divinity, perform false miracles, and mislead millions.

2.2. The Descent of Prophet Jesus (Isa AS)

Allah says in the Quran:

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَعِلْمٌۭ لِّلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمْتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَٱتَّبِعُونِ ۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌۭ مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭ

“And he (Jesus) shall be a sign of the Hour.” (Quran 43:61)

Jesus (AS) will return to kill the Dajjal, establish justice, and rule before the final days.

2.3. The Release of Gog and Magog (Yajuj and Majuj)

Allah mentions in the Quran:

“Until Gog and Magog are let loose and they rush down from every height.” (Quran 21:96)

These destructive tribes will spread chaos before being destroyed by Allah’s command.

2.4. Three Massive Earthquakes

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“The Hour will not be established until there are three major earthquakes: one in the East, one in the West, and one in the Arabian Peninsula.” (Ahmad, Abu Dawood)

2.5. The Rising of the Sun from the West

Allah says:

“The Day when some of the signs of your Lord will come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before.” (Quran 6:158)

Once the sun rises from the west, repentance will no longer be accepted.

2.6. The Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard)

The Quran states:

“When the Word is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out a beast from the earth to speak to them.” (Quran 27:82)

This mysterious creature will mark believers and disbelievers before the end.

2.7. The Final Fire That Gathers Humanity

The Prophet (ﷺ) described:

“A fire will emerge from Yemen and drive people to their place of gathering.” (Sahih Muslim 2902)

This fire will herd humanity toward the plains of Judgment.

3. How Should Muslims Respond to These Signs?

3.1. Strengthen Your Faith and Increase Good Deeds

The Prophet (ﷺ) advised:

“Hasten to do good deeds before you are overtaken by trials like pieces of a dark night.” (Sahih Muslim 118)

3.2. Avoid Panic and Stay Steadfast

Allah says:

“So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth.” (Quran 30:60)

 3.3. Make Dua for Protection

The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to seek refuge from the trials of the Dajjal in every prayer.

Conclusion: The Hour is Near Are You Ready?

The signs of the Hour are unfolding before our eyes. Some have already happened, while others are yet to come.

As Muslims, our duty is to recognize these signs, increase in worship, and prepare for the inevitable meeting with our Creator.

Therefore, the faithful should be afraid of that Day, and their fear should remind them that ALLAAH is continuously observing their actions.

They ought to hold fast to the truth and pursue what is beneficial, while fearing wrongdoing and sin, and should not limit discussions and disagreements solely to the Hour.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"The Hour is near, so prepare for it." (Musnad Ahmad 10888)

By ALLAAH’s grace to His creation, He has provided them with signs that will signify the coming of the Hour, motivating them to engage in good actions, fear ALLAAH, and steer clear of forbidden things

Whenever they encounter one of its signs, their dread of the Hour and its terrors will grow, as will their conviction that it is near, prompting them to ready themselves by performing additional good deeds.

Allah states (interpretation of the meaning):

فَهَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ أَن تَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةًۭ ۖ فَقَدْ جَآءَ أَشْرَاطُهَا ۚ فَأَنَّىٰ لَهُمْ إِذَا جَآءَتْهُمْ ذِكْرَىٰهُمْ

“Are they waiting for anything besides the Hour to arrive suddenly upon them?” However, certain of its omens (indications and signs) have already appeared. (Quran: 47:18)

Let this be a wake-up call for all of us. The time to act is now before it’s too late.
