How To Get Closer To Allah In Ramadan?

Eid-ul-Fitr 2025

Ramadan is a special time of the year for Muslims around the world.

It’s not just about abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk; it’s a month of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and drawing closer to Allah (SWT).

If you’ve ever wondered how to make the most of this blessed month and truly deepen your connection with Allah, you’re in the right place.

In this article, we’ll explore practical and heartfelt ways to get closer to Allah during Ramadan. Let’s dive in!

 Understanding the Significance of Ramadan

Before we talk about how to get closer to Allah, it’s important to understand why Ramadan is so significant. Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

It’s a time when the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.

This creates a unique opportunity for us to focus on our spiritual growth without as many distractions.

Allah says in the Quran:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ ١٨٣

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (Quran 2:183)

Fasting is not just about physical abstinence; it’s about cultivating taqwa (God-consciousness). When we fast, we’re reminded of our dependence on Allah and our responsibility to live according to His guidance.

1. Set Clear Intentions (Niyyah)

The first step to getting closer to Allah in Ramadan is to set clear intentions. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will be rewarded according to what they intended.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Before Ramadan begins, take some time to reflect on what you want to achieve this month. Do you want to improve your relationship with the Quran?

Do you want to become more consistent in your prayers?

Do you want to work on a specific character trait, like patience or gratitude?

Write down your goals and make dua (supplication) to Allah to help you achieve them.

2. Prioritize Salah (Prayer)

Salah is the cornerstone of our relationship with Allah. During Ramadan, make an effort to not only perform your obligatory prayers on time but also to add voluntary prayers like Tahajjud (night prayer) and Taraweeh.

Taraweeh is a special prayer performed during Ramadan after Isha.

It’s a beautiful way to connect with the Quran, as the entire Quran is often recited over the course of the month.

Even if you can’t attend the mosque, try to pray Taraweeh at home.

Pro tip: Use a prayer journal to track your salah and reflect on how it’s impacting your spiritual state.

 3. Build a Relationship with the Quran

Ramadan is the month of the Quran, so it’s the perfect time to deepen your connection with it.

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced reader, here are some ways to engage with the Quran:

  • – Set a daily reading goal: Aim to read a certain number of pages or verses each day.
    • Even if it’s just one page, consistency is key.
  • – Reflect on the meaning: Don’t just read the Quran; try to understand its message.
    • Use a translation or tafsir (exegesis) to help you.
  • – Memorize a few verses: Challenge yourself to memorize a new ayah (verse) each day.
  • – Listen to Quranic recitation: Play Quran recitations in your home or while commuting.
    • The melodious recitation can have a calming and uplifting effect.

4. Make Dua (Supplication)

Dua is a powerful tool for drawing closer to Allah. It’s your direct line of communication with Him. During Ramadan, especially in the last ten nights, make dua a priority. Here are some tips for effective dua:

  • – Be sincere: Pour your heart out to Allah. He knows what’s in your heart, so don’t hold back.
  • – Ask for everything: Whether it’s guidance, forgiveness, or blessings for your loved ones, ask Allah for everything you need.
  • – Use the times when dua is most likely to be accepted: These include the last third of the night, during sujood (prostration), and between Adhan and Iqamah.

5. Give Charity (Sadaqah and Zakat)

Ramadan is a time of generosity. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known to be especially generous during this month. Giving charity not only helps those in need but also purifies your wealth and soul.

  1. – Pay Zakat: If you’re eligible, calculate and pay your Zakat during Ramadan.
  2. – Give Sadaqah: Even small acts of kindness, like feeding someone iftar, count as sadaqah.
  3. – Volunteer: If you’re unable to give financially, consider volunteering your time to help others.

6. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful way to draw closer to Allah. When we acknowledge His blessings, we become more aware of His presence in our lives.

– Keep a gratitude journal: Each day, write down three things you’re grateful for.

– Say Alhamdulillah: Make it a habit to say “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is due to Allah) throughout the day.

– Reflect on your blessings: Take a moment to appreciate the simple things, like food, water, and the people in your life.

7. Seek Forgiveness (Istighfar)

Ramadan is a time for seeking forgiveness and turning back to Allah. No matter what mistakes you’ve made in the past, Allah’s mercy is vast.

Say “Astaghfirullah”: Make istighfar a regular part of your day.

Reflect on your actions: Take time to identify areas where you need to improve and make a plan to change.

Forgive others: Just as you seek Allah’s forgiveness, forgive those who have wronged you.

8. Connect with the Community

Ramadan is a time of unity and togetherness. Strengthen your bond with the Muslim community by:

Attending the mosque: Join your local mosque for iftar, Taraweeh, and other activities.

Hosting iftar: Invite friends, family, or neighbors to break their fast with you.

Supporting others: Check on those who may be struggling, whether financially or emotionally.

9. Focus on Self-Reflection

Ramadan is a time for introspection. Use this month to evaluate your life and make positive changes.

  • -Identify bad habits: What habits are holding you back from being the best version of yourself?
  • – Set spiritual goals: What do you want to achieve by the end of Ramadan?
  • – Track your progress: Regularly assess how you’re doing and make adjustments as needed.

-10. Embrace the Last Ten Nights

The last ten nights of Ramadan are especially blessed, as they include Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power), which is better than a thousand months.

Increase your worship: Spend extra time in prayer, dua, and Quran recitation.

Seek Laylatul Qadr: The Prophet (PBUH) advised us to seek this night in the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th).

Make heartfelt dua: This is the perfect time to ask Allah for your deepest desires.

Ramadan is a gift from Allah, a chance to reset, recharge, and reconnect with Him.

By setting clear intentions, prioritizing salah, engaging with the Quran, and practicing gratitude and forgiveness, you can make this Ramadan the most meaningful one yet.

Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. Even small steps toward Allah can lead to profound changes in your life.

May Allah accept your fasts, prayers, and good deeds this Ramadan and grant you closeness to Him. Ameen.
